The IUCN's Red List of Threatened and Endangered Species is a global assessment of the conservation status of species. Every species in each country is assigned a conservation status score ranging from 1 (Least Concern) to 6 (Critically Endangered). The dominant threat drivers for each species are also identified.
Here we provide an environmental satellite account with IUCN Red List data mapped to the Eora model classification. This allows for computing a biodiversity footprint of each country and estimating how production and demand drive biodiversity threats and biodiversity loss.
In accordance with the IUCN's sublicensing terms, this data is only for non-commerical use. For commercial use of IUCN data, please contact the IUCN. If you obtain permission for the IUCN to use Red List data for commercial purposes, you may use this satellite account for convenience in connecting your Red List data to your Eora subscription.
This data is only available to logged-in users. Please login to access the data.
The metadata is provided in the following zip file: indices.zip
The Red List-to-Eora mapping matrix for 2024 is available here: Eora2_full_QT_2024.txt.zip
These files may be used in a standard Leontief demand-pull model with the Eora data to compute biodiversity footprint multipliers (Scope 3) footprints. Unfortunately we are unable to provide these results pre-computed.
This mapping covers a single data year. We are unable to provide mappings for other years.
This environmental satellite account for Eora2 reports the total count of species evaluated in the Red List, itemized by rows according to their level of threat intensity and distributed across columns by the country and sector driving the threats. When a species is threatened by multiple drivers, that unitary species count is pro-rated among implicated sectors according to the gross revenue of each sector.
The methodology used to constructed this satellite account is described fully in the following two papers:
